Presenting Oviyam, the web DICOM browser (Previously New DICOM webviewer..)

Note: There's a new name and a new release. The new 0.6 release notes and download link.

New DICOM webviewer for DCM4CHEE / PACS - your comments

Hi there,

We have been developing a Web viewer for PACS. Initially it was started for DCM4CHEE PACS, but our goal is to make it work with any PACS.

I have posted some screenshots for your comments. Soon a live demo site will be available for testing. If anyone is interested, I can send the code along with installation instructions.

We use the DCM4CHE WADO component running on JBoss to retrieve images, and generate the webpages. Only view is possible with limited zoom facilities. We would like to provide an optional flash based rich viewer for pseudo WL/WW (brightness/contrast) annotations and measurements. (Any help with flash is appreciated)

We will be open sourcing the code and contributing it back to the community, once we've fixed all the bugs.

I love this! excellent, I can't wait to test drive it and see how it "feels"

I do have one comment however, and I think its due to a recent disciplinary action I received (mild hand slapping) ...

On this UI shot:

http://skshospital.net/pacs/webviewer/img/view_study.jpg

I have been told and think I agree that when displaying clinical data, only the information for ONE patient, in context, should be seen. Patient lists should minimize or eject themselves during an image review.

Looks great though...

Hi all, I'm the project lead and thought I'd weigh in with some of the design considerations.

Sween,

The interface offers both options. You can also have the images of only the current patient, displayed in a new window as seen in this screenshot. Our UI design has been influenced by OsiriX and Apple's .mac image gallery. However based on your suggestion, I think we can add an option to slide the patient list out of view.

Arnold,

The code is already available if you don't mind being shocked by all the warts and wrinkles ;-). Just send me an email & I'll send you a copy along with installation instructions. We're still cleaning up the code. Please bear in mind the project was hacked together in less than a months time as a proof of concept and we're still paying for our hastiness. One other issue is how and where to host the code.

Please keep the suggestions rolling in.

Hi Suresh !

Please send it to arnold.maderthaner@j4care.com as I want to try it out. You could host the code on sourceforge or google.

Arnold,

I'll send you a link to download the code along with install instructions by this weekend. We're still shooting down some bugs. Are you currently running a DCM4CHEE PACS server? If so, it's just a single WAR file that you have to copy to your server.

Note: There 's been a new release. The new 0.6 release notes and download link.

It's finally here!!

Webview 0.5 Download page

Please note that this is a highly preliminary, beta release. The usual disclaimers apply: we're not responsible if your server blows up, your hair catches on fire, etc. This was started as a side project that gained a momentum of it's own. None of us are web programmers so it may not be up to W3C standards so please spare us ;-). Future versions will move towards compliance.

We need your feedback to improve it further. We would like suggestions & help in the following areas

  • UI Design - Any User interface improvements - both to make it more practical, as well as to make it look more elegant.
  • Features that need to be added
  • Generating Flash images*
  • Bugs, bugs, bugs.
  • A nice name for the project. Webview seems so plain and ordinary.

Please post back here if you have any trouble installing or running the software. Have fun :-)

Suresh

*The idea is to have an three options at login in future:

1. The current "Light weight viewer" using only HTML

2. A "Medium weight viewer" using Flash which will allow Pan & Zoom, Brightness and Contrast adjustment.

3. A "Heavy weight viewer" using an embedded Java applet to provide WL/WW adjustment and HU readings, annotations and measurements. (This is based on a Java DICOM viewer that is currently under devlopment)

Hello, just loaded this up and it looks great. Really easy install, this is much appreciated :)

It might suggest making the fonts just a little smaller; also, changing the green to a light blue might be more appealing. (Coming from an interface designer.)

As well, if WADO isn't behind port 8080, it doesn't look like the images load. (We have an installation running on port 80).

All of that said, kudos on the project. It looks sharp.

Hi Phil,

It's always nice to be appreciated :-) Thanks from all of us.

Right now we just wanted to release what we'd done to the community and solicit feedback. In a future release we'll move all configuration settings to the JMX console. Your comments as an interface designer are especially valuable and please keep them comming.

I plan on publishing a feature list for the 0.6 release once a few more comments roll in.

Great, without any efforts it works!

Unfortunately my images, coming from PAL video (768x592), are all displayed in a square format, so distorted. I understand this is an early Beta version, so I don't complain. For the rest my compliments!

Roadmap for the next release (Webviewer Beta - Release 0.6)
Posted: Dec 6, 2007 4:35 PM   in response to: janrorive in response to: janrorive
I'd like to thank everyone for being very supportive of our efforts. Special thanks to those of you who have downloaded the webviewer and given their feedback - we really appreciate it. We're all hard at work on the next release & I thought I'd share what's going on.

Coming up in Webviewer Beta - Release 0.6
  • Ground up rewrite using more CSS
  • Greater W3C compliance
  • Single window interface (The current version spawns a new window if you want to view all imaged)
  • Keyboard shortcuts to move back and forth between images in a series
  • Configuration screen for Host name, port, AETitle & WADO port (WADO port issue pointed out by Phil - thanks)
  • Support for multiple hosts
  • Display of non-square images with proportional scaling (Issue pointed out by Jan - thanks)
  • Pan & Zoom
  • View DICOM Attributes / Dataset for current image
Also I'd like Damien's comments on the following proposed changes:
  • Use of DCM4CHEE user accounts for login using the DCM4CHEE bean
  • Query/retrieval of the patient list & study series using the DCM4CHEE bean. At present we're using standard DICOM queries.
Is it ok to use the DCM4CHEE bean and is there a possibility of future versions creating compatibility issues?

I'd like to have this version out by the end of next week, so some of these features might get shifted to the next release if they're not fully debugged. Suggestions for new features are always welcome.
